A Durban-based South African gaming creator is building an increasingly international audience through TikTok, highlighting the growing opportunities available to creators in the country’s digital economy.

Known as BigJoe, the gaming content creator and founder says his journey started with gaming clips before evolving into a broader content platform featuring educational gaming videos, tutorials, entertainment and commentary.
Rather than focusing solely on gameplay, BigJoe says his content aims to help gamers understand games better, discover features they may have missed and remain informed about developments within the gaming space.
Millions of views in just 60 days
BigJoe’s recent TikTok statistics show significant growth.
According to figures shared by the creator, his content generated 6.5 million views over a 60-day period, alongside 474,300 likes and 35,400 shares.
His profile also recorded 44,500 views, while he gained approximately 13,600 net new followers during the period.
The growth has taken his TikTok following to more than 16,700 followers.
South African creator, international audience
One of the notable aspects of BigJoe’s growth is the geographic spread of his audience.
The creator says approximately 24% of his audience is based in South Africa, meaning the majority of his audience comes from outside the country.
His viewers include audiences in Fiji, the Philippines, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea and the United States, among other countries.
For creators producing content from South Africa, platforms such as TikTok provide an opportunity to reach audiences without being restricted by traditional geographic boundaries.
Gaming content is becoming more than gameplay
BigJoe’s journey also reflects how gaming content has evolved on social media.
Gaming creators are increasingly combining gameplay with education, commentary, entertainment and community-building. Short-form platforms have also made it possible for creators to introduce their content to people who may not previously have followed traditional gaming channels.
For South African creators, this can open access to international communities and audiences interested in gaming culture.
BigJoe says his vision is to continue producing content that educates and entertains while helping gamers discover more about the games they play.
His growth comes at a time when the creator economy is providing new opportunities for South Africans to build digital brands and communities from within the country.
InsideOutNews will continue following South Africa’s growing creator economy and the digital entrepreneurs using social media to build audiences at home and abroad.
